Mary Huggard
Mary is one of our unsung heroes of the School, being part of our community in one way or another since 1996. She visited the school that first year in Glenburnie with her infant daughter Elena after a visiting friend requested that they find the ‘Waldorf Initiative’ in the area. Although she had never heard of ‘Waldorf’ or Mulberry, just walking in the door that first time made her realize right away that she wanted to be part of this beautiful place. In 1997 Mary and Elena, now a toddler, joined a Parent and Child group and the journey began!
Trained as both a teacher and a childbirth educator, Mary began facilitating a prenatal program for Mulberry families in 2000, and when those babies arrived, she began our first Parent and Infant Group in 2001. She was a volunteer assistant with Ellen and Nancy in the Parent and Child program in 2000, began facilitating her own group in 2001 when Tammy went on maternity leave, and has facilitated Parent and Child groups every year since then. (Read that again: an unbroken record of involvement with Mulberry!)
Even now in 2022, Mary remains one of the crown jewels of Mulberry, parent to Elena with the late Steven Heighton. After graduating from Mulberry, Elena got a degree in Psychology and then a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy. She is now a practicing OT specializing in the area of pediatric (child and youth) mental health.
When not focused on Mulberry, Mary's out-of-school passions and pastimes are hiking, paddling, swimming, snowshoeing and/or skiing in the woods and on the lakes of the country north of Kingston where her family shares co-operatively stewarded land with ‘off-grid’ living.
